A fire tore through and gutted a home that was under construction in Thornhill on Thursday morning.

Firefighters were called to the 9,500-sq.-ft. home on Thornbank Road near Centre Street, just west of Yonge Street, shortly before 3 a.m., when a passerby noticed smoke coming from the building.

Six fire trucks rushed to the scene, but the fire spread quickly and caused the walls and roof of the house to collapse into the basement.

Vaughan firefighters said that crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to neighbouring homes by spraying them with water.

When the water froze, one firefighter slipped on the ice, but his injuries were minor.

Hours later, firefighters were still on scene putting out hot spots, but the blaze is under control.

The damage is estimated at several million dollars, though the exact amount has not yet been released.
