Toronto's effort to protect the environment could have an impact on what you roll out to the curb.Mayor John Tory said Monday that he wants council to phase out the extra large garbage bins used in the city to encourage people to send less to landfills.

Tory is back in Toronto after spending time in Paris for the international climate conference last week. He also says the city will also look at lighting more buildings with LEDs, retrofitting buildings to make them more energy efficient, and planting more trees.

The city's extra large garbage bin can hold an estimated 4.5 bags of garbage compared to the capacity of the large garbage bins that can be used, holding an estimated 3 bags of garbage.

Mayor Tory says he doesn't have a timeline on when he hopes councillors will back his plan, but would like to see it happen in 2016 or 2017.

According to Tory, city studies have shown that 77% of what goes in those extra large bins should actually be composted or recycled.
