Pleas from residents to take a step back and get more public input on the library/leisure centre expansion went unheeded as Whitchurch-Stouffville council opted to vote unanimously in favour of the expansion tonight.
The council chambers were filled to capacity, with residents in the town hall lobby on Sandiford Drive waiting for a decision.
A number of seniors spoke in favour of the original, more expensive expansion plan, while advocating for an inclusive building.
That design, which was created during the last term of council, had an estimated cost of $28 million and included a second pool, seniors’ area, outside terrace and two-storey library.
To go ahead with that more expensive plan would have resulted in a 5.5 per cent tax hike, according to town treasurer Liz Arujo.
"I will not force out residents by prosperity we cannot afford," said Mayor Justin Altmann.
Its cost exceeded this council’s new debt management policy, according to a report before council tonight.
The new design is estimated to cost $12.8 million and includes an expanded library, a new home for Latcham Gallery, new fitness area, new multipurpose space and child minding/preschool program room.
The final design concept plan and pricing is expected to go before council for approval on Dec. 15.
