A dog was fatally poisoned while walking with its owner on a sidewalk in a residential area in Vaughan last week, police say.
York Regional Police said Monday that the owner of the female beagle-pug mix reported the dog had to be put down on Friday, and that a veterinarian said the animal exhibited symptoms consistent with antifreeze poisoning.
The owner had been walking the dog on the south side of Shawbridge Blvd. - in the Hwy. 27-Rutherford Rd. area - on Wednesday, when the canine ate something on the ground around a community mailbox.
The dog became violently ill and too weak to walk. It’s condition deteriorated to the point the animal was euthanized.
Police are focusing on dog kibble that investigators found scattered around the mailbox.
“The dog food was spread out on the grass in a 10- to 15-foot span on the south side of the sidewalk, just by the mailbox,” Const. Laura Nicolle said, adding the food is being tested.
She also said police checked for other bits of kibble on the ground and the City of Vaughan will conduct a sweep of the area.
