Whitchurch-Stouffville council wants the York Region chairperson to be elected by the general public.

The post is currently elected, but by the other mayors in the region.

Former Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville mayor Wayne Emmerson currently holds the position. He was appointed a year ago.

Council passed the motion supporting Bill 42, with a 3-2 margin last night.

Councillors Iain Lovatt, Rob Hargrave and Maurice Smith favoured the motion. Councillors Rick Upton and Hugo Kroon opposed it. Councillor Ken Ferdinands was absent from the meeting.

Mayor Justin Altmann said he would second the motion during Thursday’s regional council meeting.

Altmann also noted, during Tuesday’s council meeting, Markham (9-4) and Aurora (7-1) also passed motions supporting the regional chairperson becoming an elected position for the 2018 municipal election.
