Crucial vote Thursday for proposed PowerStream merger

The mayors of Vaughan, Markham and Barrie are working to shore up support for a multi-million merger of three municipally owned power distribution companies ahead of a crucial vote Thursday.

They held a press conference Tuesday extolling the benefits of merging PowerStream, co-owned by Vaughan, Markham and Barrie, with Mississauga-owned Enersource and Horizon Utilities co-owned by St. Catharines and Hamilton.

In order for that to happen, all six municipal councils must support it.

Every municipality, except Markham, has voted in favour of the deal.

Markham is slated to hold a vote Thursday, but councillors there are divided on the issue.

If they vote it down, the merger would bescuttled.
