Hedy Bohm was chosen Senior of the Year at the Viva Thornhill Woods Retirement Community last week, and it’s not hard to see why judges honored her with the inaugural Schwartz/Reisman Centre Senior of the Year award.
Bohm travelled to Germany twice, first to testify in court against a former Nazi SS officer on trial for his part in the murders of Jews at the Auschwitz concentration camp, where her own parents were killed.
Her second trip to Europe was to witness the sentencing of the former officer, sent to prison for four years.
The award aimed to recognize “deserving older adults for their contributions to community”.
Sandy Bokser was runner-up, along with Jack Cooper.
Judges for the award included representatives from the City of Vaughan, the Schwartz/Reisman Centre and V!VA Thornhill Woods Retirement Community, along with author, Elise Kayfetz, and publisher of the Senioropolis directory, Esther Goldstein.
