As part of our plan to strengthen the middle class and grow local economies, a new Liberal government will invest a total of $2 billion in transit infrastructure in GO service, said the Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today.

“From Oshawa to Hamilton, from Vaughan to the Gardiner, traffic congestion in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area is hindering the potential of our communities,” said Mr. Trudeau.

“People deserve a safe, quick, and efficient way to cross the GTHA - whether it’s to visit friends, get home to family, make it to a job interview, or get to our kids’ soccer game on time. The time to invest in infrastructure and transit is now - not two or three elections from now.”

The Liberal infrastructure investment plan will be the largest in the history of Canada. We will invest nearly 60 billion new dollars in infrastructure over ten years. In the GTHA, we will invest in efficient, high-quality, and vitally important public transit. After years of under investment by Stephen Harper, a new Liberal government will invest in the GO Train network.

We will fully fund the federal share of the province’s recent funding request for the Regional Express Rail project for the GTHA. This investment will allow projects like electrified service on the GO Train lines to provide faster, better service for commuters in places like Ajax and Pickering, or Vaughan and Kitchener. In total, it means a $2 billion investment for GO. In addition, this electrification will also enable the SmartTrack project to go ahead - a project that we will help build in partnership with the City of Toronto. On top of this, we are fully committed to the federal share of Smart Track.

“Every dollar we spend on infrastructure - here in GTHA, and across the country - will grow our economy, create jobs, and strengthen our cities and communities. A Liberal government will invest in the things Canadians need right now,” said Mr. Trudeau. “Confident countries build ambitiously. We will make significant investments in priority areas like public transit, affordable housing, child care, roads, bridges, and the infrastructure we need to ready ourselves for a changing climate. By working alongside provinces, territories, and municipalities, Liberals will make smart investments to grow local economies and bring real change to our middle class.”
