Residents of Aurora are among the last people in the country to be switched from door-to-door mail to community mailboxes. Some in the community are annoyed by the timing, while others are taking it in stride.
Brenda Lessard-Rhead, 52 - Naturopathic doctor
“They installed this box about a week and a half ago, and just (Monday) they started delivering mail here. When I saw on the news they’re cancelling community mailboxes I was really cursing that we missed it by one day. We weren’t very happy about the whole thing,” said Rhead, referring to herself and her husband.
Shari Curran, 48 - Sales
“I laughed out loud actually when I heard they are suspending the community mailboxes. It’s a joke. It’s ridiculous. But I’m not going to fight to get my home delivery back. To me that will cost more money. Why send more money? Just leave what you’ve done and go from there. It would be silly to change it all back.”
Simon Meredith, 59 - Accountant
“I was disappointed we just missed the cutoff. I don’t think they’ll restore our home delivery now that it’s cut off. That will be quite the expense. I guess that’s how things go. My wife and I come home late and go to work early, so this (mailbox) is inconvenient. It’s inconvenient coming home late when it’s dark and having to fish in this thing for mail.”
John Cooper, 70 - Retired
“They’re putting these boxes on hold. There’s tens of millions of dollars of cost at stake. For me personally it’s not an issue ... regarding the timing of the (latest announcement from Canada Post). I’m still fit and able to walk this far. It’s always nice to find mail at your door, but this is not a big issue for me. Maybe I’m a dissenting voice.”
Wendy Neal, 50 - Interior design
“I just got this box Monday, so yes I’m disappointed we missed out by a matter of days. We bought our house in old Aurora knowing we’d get mail service, to be perfectly honest, so that was a nice feature. This box is an inconvenience. Plus living on a small little court others might be driving and coming on our street to get their mail - there’s a concern about the number of cars this is going to bring on the street.”
Tino Petrossi, 52 - business owner
“I don’t mind the timing. I know why they’re stopping it. The Liberals made a promise and now they’re living up to it. The promise was a dumb one in the first place and was made to garner votes. Now they’re being even dumber, and you can quote me on that ... I’m more ticked that they’re cancelling them because that’s a waste of money.”
