Liberal candidate Francesco Sorbara has overtaken incumbent Conservative candidate Julian Fantino for the Vaughan-Woodbridge riding.

The riding was one of the key seats in the 905 the Conservatives were hoping to hold onto despite the fact that the new boundaries encompass a much smaller area than in the previous election, which saw Fantino win by 26.5 per cent of the vote.

The riding now covers all of southwest Vaughan and includes any part of York Region south of Regional Road 11 and west of Highway 400.

If this riding existed in its current form in the last election, the Conservatives would have taken it by 25.9 per cent more votes than the Liberals (based on polling results).

Before 2011, the seven ridings in York Region had generally been Liberal, with the exception of York-Simcoe and Newmarket-Aurora. But with the addition of Thornhill and Oak Ridges-Markham to their tally in 2008, the Conservatives won every seat in the region with the exception of Markham-Unionville.
