Q - What did you think was the biggest story for Thornhill residents this year and why?
A - The biggest story of 2014 was the country’s continuing steady recovery from the international economic crisis. It wasn’t spectacular with headlines every day, but the improving economy, combined with the federal government’s tax cuts and improved family benefits, represented the big story for Thornhillers.
Q - Which issue/story had the biggest impact on you in 2015 and why?
A - The terrorist murders of Canadian Forces Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent and the attack on Parliament were brutal reminders of the need for increased domestic security and greater vigilance with regard to the phenomenon of homegrown, radicalized youth.
Q - What do you predict will be the biggest issue for Thornhill residents in coming months and 2015 generally?
A - Thornhillers, I’m sure, will have a continuing interest in our steadily improving economic recovery. But the major everyday issue that touches us all involves transportation challenges, particularly the extension of the Yonge Street subway. I’ll continue to work with counterparts on Vaughan and Markham city councils, exploring ways to make the subway north extension a priority for our partners at Metrolinx, Toronto and Queen’s Park.
Q - What is the biggest issue you will focus on in the coming year?
A - I’ll continue to focus on our federal government’s measures to keep taxes low, to support families and to keep the community of Thornhill safe. And, of course, as we near completion of the Spadina subway extension through York University to the Vaughan Corporate Centre, we’ll work to make the Yonge Street subway extension a priority with our transit partners.
Q - What is your New Year’s resolution for 2015?
A - I’ll resolve to live every day to the fullest, to cherish family, friends and constituents, to work hard as Thornhill’s representative in Ottawa ... and to appreciate the wonderful community and country in which we live.
