VINTAGE VAUGHAN: Thoreau MacDonald

Yorkregion.com
Dec. 24, 2015

This image is of Thoreau MacDonald, son of Group of Seven Artist J.E.H. MacDonald, at his home in Thornhill, ca. 1950.

Member artists of the first nationalistic art movement in Canada lived in Thornhill during the 1920s. Those artists included John E. MacDonald, Arthur Lismer, Fred Varley, Franz Johnston, and Frank Carmichael. Thoreau MacDonald was a very accomplished artist in his own right, and a collection of his sketches are preserved in the City of Vaughan Archives. The J.E.H. MacDonald house (located at 121 Centre St, Thornhill) is today owned by the City of Vaughan and is a preserved cultural site in the community.
