Newmarket's Yonge Street to see closures for Hydro pole installation

Newmarket area drivers can expect delays on Yonge Street for short periods over the next two months as works install new hydro poles for a Regional Municipality of York project.

The region is doing work for a massive plan to widen Yonge Street between Davis Drive and Green Lane. For that, workers are relocating utilities, with large hydro poles getting brought in over February and March.

The region said that this means sections of Yonge Street will be temporarily closed for periods of 15 minutes due to the size of the poles. Travelers can expect some reduced lanes and police on site to assist.

“Thank you for your patience. We understand road construction creates challenges,” the region said, adding that it would work to minimize disruptions.

York Region began work on a project to expand Yonge Street from four to six lanes last summer. The approximately $94.5 million project is expected to continue through 2026, with one of the lanes also getting designated a high-occupancy vehicle lane.

“This multi-year project will support growth along this busy corridor while creating an efficient, safe and attractive roadway for travellers,” the region said on its website.

The region noted that as with all construction projects, things could be rescheduled due to weather.

The region said some of the utility work is already complete, with more to come throughout the year. Phase two of the project will include the actual road widening and reconstruction, expected to begin in early 2025.

You can find more details on the project on the region’s website.
