A person is in custody after a baby was found in distress at a Vaughan home Thursday and later died in hospital, police say.

York Regional Police said they received a call about an injured person on Wade Gate, near Dufferin and Centre streets, at about 6:10 p.m.

When police arrived, they found the baby in distress. The child was taken to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

No charges have been laid. The baby's age and sex have not been released.

Police have not provided further details, saying they are in the early stages of the investigation.

On Thursday night, there was a police presence in the neighbourhood and officers had taped off the house as they investigated.
