2024 will be an exciting year in Georgina. There are many projects, events and activities happening throughout the Town.

Our Jan. 17 Council meeting provided the date of the Grand Opening of the MURC, Saturday, March 2. More details will be provided on the activities being planned for that day and for the month of March at the Feb. 7 meeting. The spring session for all programs and lessons will begin in April.

Join us on Saturday, Feb. 3 for SnoFest at the ROC from 1 to 6 p.m. This annual event features activities for all ages and includes games, food, live entertainment, an igloo dance party and more. Don't miss out on the newest addition this year -- a stunning fireworks display at 6 p.m. Regular tube/lift and chalet prices apply.

The Town was happy to work with the LSRCA (Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority) on the recent transfer of lands from the Conservation Authority to the municipality. The lands include: Franklin Beach Conservation area, Holmes Point Conservation Area, Willow Beach Conservation Area and the Keswick North Watercourse. The Town did own parcels at both Willow Beach and Holmes Point but the addition of the Conservation Authority lands provides the Town with the opportunity to move forward with park improvements.

The Town has enacted a pilot project to permit the use of off-road vehicles on Town roads within the Waterfront Park Buffer Zone and the Ward 5 catchment area. This is in effect until April 15 to allow people to access Lake Simcoe for ice fishing. Off-road vehicles are allowed under certain conditions found in the bylaw. Please remember that off-road vehicles are only allowed to cross Regional or Provincial highways, not to travel on them.

The Waterfront Park Buffer Zone includes the entire shoreline area of Lake Simcoe and Town roads in lakeside neighbourhoods. The Ward 5 catchment area is bounded by Park Road, Old Homestead Road, Weir’s Sideroad, Ravenshoe Road, Lakeridge Road and Highway 48. Staff will provide Council with a report after the pilot project to review next steps.

Through this column we will try to provide some information but always encourage residents to visit our website, georgina.ca, sign up for our enewsletter, follow our social media channels, watch our Council meetings or read the Council highlights for more details.

Hope to see you at SnoFest at the ROC on Saturday, Feb. 3, 1 to 6 p.m. There will be lots of activities throughout the day topped off with a fireworks display at 6 p.m.
