The City of Vaughan’s second annual Tamil Heritage Month and Thai Pongal celebration takes place Monday (Jan. 22) from 6 to 8 p.m. at Vaughan City Hall.
The evening will commemorate the culture of Vaughan’s Tamil residents and celebrate their art and heritage.
The event will include traditional music and dance performances, as well as greetings from Mayor Steven Del Duca and a candle-lighting ceremony.
Background:
Tamils around the world honour this time of joy with many traditions, such as visiting family; preparing Pongal, a rice dish closely associated with the holiday; disposing of old or unwanted items, which symbolizes the end of the old and the beginning of the new; and much more.
Vaughan has proclaimed January Tamil Heritage Month -- a time to reflect on the history, culture and contributions of Tamil communities across the country.
