Ward 2 Councillor Brian Johns will assume the role of East Gwilimbury acting Mayor and Regional Councillor from Dec. 1 to March 31. Mayor Virginia Hackson announced she was going on medical leave Nov. 2. Ward 3 Councillor Scott Crone had served as the acting mayor for the month of November.

"After very careful consideration, in consultation with my family and on the advice of my physician, I have made the decision to take some time away from my position of mayor," Hackson said in statement at the time her leave was announced. "This is one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make because I love supporting the community and working with this great team. I trust that East Gwillimbury is in good hands, and I know that council and staff will work together to ensure a smooth transition and that the business of the municipality will proceed without interruption. I would like to thank the community, council, and staff for their support.”

Johns was first elected to East Gwillimbury Council in 2022. “During this period my focus will be on maintaining the momentum of progress within East Gwillimbury,” Johns said. “Collaboration with fellow councillors, engagement with community members, and advocacy for the needs of our town will be at the forefront of my agenda.”
