On Dec. 12, Central York Fire Services Chief Ian Laing, who died peacefully in his sleep on Nov. 30, will be honoured at a public funeral.

Family, friends, dignitaries, fire service personnel from Central York Fire Services (CYFS) and fire service representatives from across the country will gather to pay respects at the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex at 100 Eagle St. W.

A funeral procession to the arena comprised of uniformed service members will take place starting at approximately 12:30 p.m. The public service begins at 1 p.m.

Drivers are advised to avoid travel on Eagle from Yonge Street to Crossland Gate, as there will be intermittent road closures from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

During the funeral, Aurora and Newmarket will be fully covered in case of fire emergencies.

Neighbouring fire departments have stepped in to provide full coverage to our communities and allow CYFS staff to attend Laing’s funeral. This is a testament to the fire service family, which extends beyond borders, a municipal statement said.
