East Gwillimbury Mayor Virginia Hackson is taking a short-term medical leave for up to three months, effective immediately.

At a special council meeting Nov 2, council passed a resolution to grant the mayor this temporary leave. This resolution is required under section 259 (1) (c) of the Municipal Act for any council member who will be absent from council meetings for three successive months.

"After very careful consideration, in consultation with my family and on the advice of my physician, I have made the decision to take some time away from my position of mayor," Hackson said. "This is one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make because I love supporting the community and working with this great team. I trust that East Gwillimbury is in good hands, and I know that council and staff will work together to ensure a smooth transition and that the business of the municipality will proceed without interruption. I would like to thank the community, council, and staff for their support.”

As per the 2022 to 2026 rotational acting mayor schedule, Coun. Scott Crone is the current acting mayor and will serve as council’s representative at regional council at this time.

Hackson has served as East Gwillimbury's Mayor since 2010. She also served as a town councillor from 2000 to 2010.
