York police investigating alleged act of arson at Markham community centre

An alleged act of arson at a Markham community centre has York police appealing for information.
According to York Regional Police, officers were called to a community centre in the area of Ninth Line and 14th Avenue at around 10 p.m. on Nov. 9 for a report of fire. When police arrived, Markham Fire and Emergency Services had already extinguished a small fire inside the building.
Through an investigation, it was determined that a window had been smashed and an accelerant was used to start a fire, say police.
The fire was contained to one area, causing extensive damage to floorboards within the building, add police.
The exact time of when the fire started is unknown; however, police say they believe it occurred after an evening meeting which ended at around 9:15 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and the investigation is ongoing, say police.
