As of Nov. 1, you are no longer allowed to park on Newmarket streets from 2 to 6 a.m. until April 15 to allow for snow removal during the winter.
But you have guests staying over or have another reason why you need overnight parking.
Now what?
Residents can park in certain municipal parking lots from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. with a free permit available through the off-street parking program.
The lots are:
Apply for and obtain a temporary parking permit through the town’s online parking portal at parking.newmarket.ca, where you will be asked for your vehicle information.
Vehicles must be moved from the lots by 7 a.m. to allow for snow clearing of the lot and to open space for daytime use.
Permits will be issued electronically and without the need to print or place a hard copy permit in your car.
Once registered, residents will receive important details about the rules and regulations for parking on the lots. There are designated spaces within each lot with signs marking the spaces. Selected spaces are far from the building to minimize the impact on patrons using the facilities.
Residents should consider this option when they have overnight guests, are hosting parties and need a safe space for guests to leave their vehicle overnight if they are having a few drinks, or to leave a vehicle downtown after a special dinner on Main Street.
The off-street parking program was launched as a pilot program in 2020 to meet the challenge of more cars at homes during the pandemic and has now become a permanent option each winter to offer continued flexibility to residents, the town said in a statement.
Since the pilot program was launched in December 2020, more 900 permits have been issued.
Winter parking restrictions are in effect from Nov. 1 to April 15 each year.
Regardless of whether or not there is snow on the ground, parking enforcement will be in effect. The fine for parking on the street from 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. is $100.
