Winter overnight parking restrictions on Newmarket streets are returning next Thurday.
From Nov. 1 to April 15, vehicles cannot be parked on the street from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. to allow for appropriate snow removal, a Town of Newmarket news release stated.
Regardless of whether or not there is snow on the ground, parking enforcement will be in effect. The fine for parking on roads between 2 and 6 a.m. is $100.
Residents are encouraged to park in select municipal lots overnight from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. by applying for a free temporary permit through the town’s online parking portal by providing their vehicle information.
Vehicles must be moved by 7 a.m. to give way to snow clearing of the lot, and to open the space for daytime use.
Residents will be permitted to park in designated spots in one of four parking lots:
All permits will be issued electronically and without the need to print or place a hard copy permit within vehicles. Once registered, residents will receive important details about the rules and regulations for parking within town-owned lots.
There are designated spaces within each lot with signs marking the spaces. Selected spaces are far from the building to minimize the impact on patrons using the facilities. These spaces are available for daytime use.
Residents should consider this option when they have overnight guests, are hosting parties and need a safe space for guests to leave their vehicle overnight if they are having a few drinks, or to leave a vehicle downtown after a special dinner on Main Street.
Since the pilot program was launched in December 2020, over 900 permits have been issued.
The Town encourages residents to take advantage of the extra parking spaces in Municipal lots through the Off-Street Parking Program when hosting friends and family during the holiday season and throughout the winter.
