With COVID-19 numbers on the rise in York Region this fall, vaccine clinics with the new Moderna booster shot are here.

Starting Oct. 10, York Region Medical Officer of Health Dr. Barry Pakes said high-risk priority groups will be eligible for the Moderna XBB.1.5. The booster will be available to everyone regionwide starting Oct. 30.

Dr. Pakes said the booster provides extra-protection against the Omicron variant. “There is an advantage to being boosted,” he said.

Dr. Pakes said there has been an uptick in COVID-19 this fall that has shown itself in the region’s wastewater monitoring and in hospitalizations.

The region’s vaccine clinics will be located at 17150 Yonge St., Newmarket; 24262 Woodbine Ave., Georgina; 4261 Hwy. 7, Unionville; 50 High Tech Rd., Richmond Hill; and 9060 Jane St., Vaughan.

The region will also be offering the flu shot at these locations. While children are not at particularly high-risk for COVID-19, Dr. Pakes said boosters are available for children 6 months and up.
