York Region appoints first new CAO in 16 years

Former public works commissioner Erin Mahoney to take over running region

York Region has a new person at the helm as council approved Erin Mahoney to step into the role of CAO Sept. 28.

Previously the public works commissioner, Mahoney will be taking over from longtime CAO Bruce Macgregor. Council voted unanimously in favour of the appointment.

“I am truly and honoured to be chosen as your next CAO,” Mahoney said. “I am really looking forward to continuing to serve council and working with our dedicated staff team to deliver on our commitments to the people and communities we serve.”

This is York Region’s first new CAO in more than 16 years, with Macgregor serving in the position since 2007.

Mahoney has been with York Region since 2008, first coming on board as commissioner of environmental services. She has served in several capacities, including as past chair of the Regional Public Works Commissioners of Ontario and on the Sustainable Development Technology Canada’s board of directors. She holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from Memorial University of Newfoundland and a Master of Engineering from the University of Western Ontario

The chief administrative officer is responsible for the day-to-day operations of York Region services and oversees more than 5,000 full-time and part-time employees. The region's five departments will all report to Mahoney.

"I am confident she will help us continue to achieve our strategic goals and deliver on the exceptional programs and services our residents and communities deserve and expect," region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson said in a news release.

As Mahoney becomes the sixth person to hold the title, Macgregor is departing this week to become the deputy CAO of the Toronto Transit Commission. Macgregor has guided the region for more than a decade, overseeing its master plans, strategic plans and budgets.

“We’ve created a culture and maintained a culture driven by continuous improvement,” Macgregor said. “Throughout my tenure, we’ve strived to maintain strong and effective collaboration with our partners.”

Emmerson praised Macgregor’s years of service.

“For 16 years, Bruce has served this council with skilled leadership and his vision to build a better region for all,” Emmerson said. “There is no doubt he has left an incredible mark on our organization ... thank you for your commitment to building strong, caring and safe communities.”
