York Region is building a new road across Highway 404 to better connect Markham and Richmond Hill.

Construction on the project begins this summer, with an expected completion date of fall 2025. The region will be widening and extending and connecting Orlando Avenue in Richmond Hill to Markland Street in Markham, creating a new four-lane road going over the highway and Rouge River.

“This new connection between the two municipalities will accommodate growth, provide more travel options, and improve access and connectivity within the area,” the region said in a news release.

The road, being built in partnership with Markham, Richmond Hill and the Ministry of Transportation, will include a bridge, multi-use sidewalks and pathways, plus landscaping. The region said it plans to plant thousands of native trees and plants along the new roadway.

The work will require lane reductions during off-peak hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. York Region said night work may also require lane closures.

During the construction, the Ministry of Transportation will also make improvements to Highway 404 in the area.

The region reminds travellers to reduce speeds through construction zones and contact it if they notice any safety concerns on site.
