On Aug. 27, Reena-supported individuals, their families, staff, friends, partner service agencies, board members, politicians and community volunteers gathered at Promenade Mall in Thornhill for Reena Fun Day, an event to raise support and celebrate the non-profit organization’s 50th anniversary.

“Celebrating 50 years of inclusive service to the community is a momentous milestone and a source of pride,” said Bryan Keshen, chief executive officer for Reena. “This celebration is about helping to expand opportunities for all people, no matter their ability, in housing, social engagement, employment and health services.”

Reena was established in 1973 by parents of children with developmental disabilities as a practical alternative to institutions, according to their website. Since that time, Reena has grown to provide support for hundreds of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.
Programs include supportive housing in North York, Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Maple; summer camps; community enrichment activities; mental health support; employment support; and respite.

“We know we make a difference when we see the community come together to support us when new housing projects are planned, when we need to fundraise and when we ask for all levels of government for their support,” said Keshen. “The positive feedback and support we receive from the individuals we serve and their families is heartwarming.”
