Throughout September and October, the Georgina Centre for Arts & Culture is hosting an exhibition of its permanent collection.

The permanent collection is an “extraordinary situation” for York Region, said artistic director and curator Charlotte Hale.

“It is the result of a commitment by generous donors to allow the next generation of curious people the ability to come to a beautiful space in their region and see art that is of the calibre that one finds in Toronto or New York,” she added.

The permanent collection will feature paintings by Albert Chiarandini, an Italian Canadian contemporary of the Group of Seven; Bruce Smith, his protege and a donor of Chiarandini’s work; and vintage pieces by York Wilson. Norval Morrisseau and Travis Shilling paintings will be featured alongside sculptures by David Ruben Piqtoukun, Gerald Gladstone and others. Vintage photography by Tom Zsolt of Georgina locales and people will also be on display.

“Not since 2015 have these masterful works of art been on display as a collective. It is an honour and a privilege to give them space again for (everyone) to appreciate,” Hale said.

The Georgina Centre for Arts & Culture permanent collection exhibition runs from Aug. 31 to Oct. 22. The opening reception is scheduled for Sept. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m.

A curator’s “walk and talk” will take place on Sept. 3 and Oct. 15 from 12 to 2 p.m. Private tours for groups of students or others interested in seeing the exhibition can be booked by contacting the gallery.
