The Town of Newmarket’s efforts to spot more water leaks at homes have paid off with more than 56,000 cubic metres of water saved over the past two years.

The new pilot leak detection program, implemented at some homes with new water metres installed, allows the town to monitor water usage and provide alerts if there are inconsistencies, according to a town news release. This has helped save 56,000 cubic metres of water as of February 2023, the equivalent of 345,000 baths.

The town offered some examples, such as a leak on a vacant property that was costing a property owner $250 per week that was identified.

“Had the leak continued undetected, it would have resulted in a high water bill and potential damages to the property,” the town said.

The initiative is part of the municipality’s ongoing efforts to install or upgrade water metres in every residence and business in town. So far, about 30 per cent of the town’s metres are installed, though the leak detection program has only been installed in some of those.

“Property owners that suspect a leak in their property are encouraged to identify the source and fix it as soon as possible to prevent receiving a high water bill,” the town said. “Reminder, it is the property owners’ responsibility for the infrastructure on their property and the water that is used, regardless of if it is a result of a leak.”

The town’s water meter replacement program has been ongoing since 2021, with proposed benefits including the ability to conduct remote water readings and improved accuracy.

“This project is another step forward in our goal to improve municipal services to the community,” Mayor John Taylor said in a news release. “Once you are eligible for a water meter upgrade, please book an appointment as soon as possible. Your cooperation is integral to the continued success of the project.”
