The son of the founder of Richmond Hill's Apotex, Barry Sherman, is donating funds to help build a new NHL-sized rink in Thornhill.
Jonathan Sherman, son of murdered billionaires Barry and Honey Sherman, is donating $52 million to pay tribute to his parents and their philanthropic legacy.
It will be located on the site of the Swartz/Reisman Centre, on Bathurst Street, on the site of the Joseph and Wolf Lebovic Jewish Centre.
The new building, which is expected to be complete by 2025, will pay tribute to both parents and will be called the Honey and Barry Memorial Arena.
“My mother and father were visionaries, who believed that our community should be one in which everyone is welcomed and included in shared experiences,” said Jonathon Sherman in a written statement released by the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, which is involved in the project.
“The Honey and Barry Memorial Arena will enhance Jewish life and the overall community experience in York Region. By prioritizing affordability as a core objective, it will enable more community members and families to forge strong connections and share their passion for sports within the broader community.”
The Shermans are suspected to have been murdered in 2017. The couple's North Toronto home was then torn down soon after without a suspect or charges. The case remains unsolved.
A new documentary about the case has just been released featuring The Toronto Star's Kevin Donovan.
