The York Catholic District School Board trustees have conditionally approved a budget for 2023-24 that projects a $12-million deficit on a $627-million operating budget.

The budget is subject to the authorization of Minister of Education Stephen Lecce.

“I know that the board of trustees was happy to endorse a budget that is committed to providing a rigorous, faith-filled education for the students who will one day lead this country,” said Chair Frank Alexander.

The board identified budget pressures as a result of declining enrolment and supply costs, which it said “are being addressed through significant but reasonable cost-saving measures.”

The projected enrolment for the 2023-24 school year is 642 fewer students compared to 2022-23, according to YCDSB data.

Highlights of the budget include investments in school leadership and to mitigate cyber risks, funds for multi-year strategic plan initiatives, including supporting equity and inclusion, and cost-saving measures in some areas, such as supply staff, facilities and maintenance.

“Under challenging financial circumstances, YCDSB staff worked incredibly hard to produce a budget that will best serve our students, staff and families,” said Domenic Scuglia, director of education. “This budget takes a responsible approach, which will start to move the board back toward balanced budgets while ensuring that students have an excellent classroom experience.”
