York Regional Police officials announced a new, modern vehicle design, which will be implanted to front-line cruisers and other fleet vehicles.

Current striping that is more than 10 years old is currently being updated.

The new design is intended to increased visibility and improve safety, with a focus on ergonomics and comfort for front-line officers, whose vehicles can serve as their office for 12 hours a day.

"We’re pleased to offer our front-line officers a more comfortable, safer vehicle that also increases their visibility in the community,” said Chief Jim MacSween.

"The new design is modern, appealing and easily recognizable to citizens and will assist in our crime prevention and patrol efforts."

The final bold blue-on-white, white-on-blue combination to maximize cruiser visibility was chosen after a review of more than 40 possible designs in consultation with YRP members and the community.

The new two-tone base design is meant to capture both a nostalgic feel, while maintaining a distinctive police look.

New features of the vehicle include:

The new car design will be rolled out as vehicles are replaced on their regular replacement schedule once they reach their end-of-service life. Police cruisers bearing the design will start appearing on York Region roads this month.

It is expected to take about four years to replace all police vehicles with the new design.
