Coyote warning issued in Newmarket

Newmarket Animal Services is warning the public about a family of coyotes showing territorial behaviour near Main Street north of Davis Drive.
Jacob Brewer, the town’s animal services supervisor, said the adult coyotes have approached a few residents walking with large dogs in the Old Main Street and Bexhill Road area.
Large dogs may be seen as a threat to the coyotes’ pups, he said.
Animal services officers are patrolling the neighbourhood conducting humane hazing techniques, such as making loud noises and large movements to deter the coyotes from staying in the area.
The public is advised to give animal service officers space when they are conducting this work, as this means the coyotes are nearby.
If possible, try to avoid the area, particularly for walking dogs.
Animal services has also been going door-to-door this week to help educate those in the immediate vicinity and provide tips to avoid interaction with the coyotes, Brewer said.
