The Town of Georgina has issued an immediate fire ban on all outdoor and open-air burning.
Burning for any purpose, including backyard bonfires and recreational fires, are not permitted during this time.
The ban will remain in effect until current air quality conditions permit.
"The ban has been issued for the protection of property, public safety and the safety of the firefighters who would have to respond to an incident started by the unlawful burning of materials," said the town in a statement.
Earlier June 6, Environment Canada issued a special air quality statement for all York Region as a result of high levels of air pollution due to smoke from forest fires.
Smoke plumes from forest fires in Quebec and northeastern Ontario could cause air quality to deteriorate during the rest of the week.
Georgina Fire and Rescue services also reminds residents help reduce the change of a grass fire, don't flick cigarette butts into the air or out of a vehicle window as the wind can pick them up and drop them in a dry area. Extinguish your butts complete before disposing of them.
