The City of Markham will host its citizenship ceremony in-person, for the first time since 2019, to kick off its emotion-charged Canada Day celebrations.

The ceremony will welcome 52 new Canadians, representing 16 countries, at the Markham Civic Centre on July 1 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The city's Canada Day celebrations are back at Markham Centre (Birchmount Rd./Enterprise Blvd.) on July 1 from 3 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. with lots of free and fun activities and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.

The event will be headlined by multi-platinum-selling artist, Tyler Shaw. Shaw is a multi-Juno Award nominee known for many platinum hit singles, including "To the Man Who Let Her Go", "With You", and "Love You Still".

“Our Canada Day stage will be filled with amazing, well-known talent,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti.

First up is 21-year-old songstress Noelle, who was raised on the Indigenous reserve in the Tyendinage Mohawk territory in Ontario. She grew up surrounded by music and quickly learned the power of her pitch-perfect voice.

Also joining is Elijah Woods. His debut solo single, "Lights", hit No. 8 in the Top 40 and was certified Canadian gold.

“This is a Canada Day celebration you won't want to miss,” said Scarpitti.

This year’s event offers an amazing lineup of fun for the whole family, from delicious food trucks to well-known musical entertainment and a dazzling display of fireworks to finish the day -- there will be something for everyone of all ages to enjoy.

The city's Canada Day celebrations at Markham Centre will have ample, free parking available, and is easily accessible by transit.

"You can expect great, family-friendly entertainment and activities," said Canada Day co-chair and councillor Amanda Yeung Collucci. "Doo Doo the Clown returns, along with magician Aaron Matthews and the City's recreation trailer full of games and activities. Last year's Canada Day celebrations were phenomenal, but what we have planned this year promises to be even better!”
