Lawn bowling, tennis, soccer and pickleball were just some of the sports children and youth had a chance to try at Sport Aurora’s All Sport One Day event.

The event, launched in 2021, is an opportunity for participants to test out a variety of sports in a recreational and noncompetitive environment.

The free event on June 17 was sponsored by ParticipACTION and filled up in a couple of days when registration opened in May.

Coaches and instructors helped participants through a morning session of lawn bowling, tennis, lacrosse and martial arts. The afternoon session had the children trying soccer, pickleball, football and rugby.

“We have presented this program in multiple seasons, and each time, we see both new participants and many returning,” said Ron Weese, president of Sport Aurora. “I think it is time to consider making this one of our ‘Pillar Programs,’ such as the Breakfast of Champions, All Kids Can Play, volunteer recognition as well as the coach- and athletes-of-the-year celebrations.”

Eight local sports organizations took part in the All Sport One Day event at McMahon Park.

“We are pleased to be able to continue providing multi-sport, ‘try-me’ opportunities with our Sport Aurora member organizations,” Weese said. “This couldn’t have been done without local sport pulling this together.”

Registration for the next All Sport One Day event on Sept. 9 opens Aug. 2 and closes Sept. 6. Space is limited. September events are subject to change, but currently include beach volleyball, softball, archery and road tennis in the morning session. The afternoon session will include basketball, martial arts, ultimate Frisbee and baseball. Visit www.sportaurora.ca for more information.
