Construction season has begun.

And by the looks of it, nearly every pocket and cul-de-sac in Georgina will be under construction over the coming months.

In fact, the 2023 to 2025 road repair program lists close to 400 construction projects on more than 220 different roads and streets in town.

Construction projects include pavement removal and resurfacing, micro-surfacing and seal crack repair work. The 2023 contract amounts to about $3.1 million.

The three-year road repair program includes close to 200,000 square metres of pavement removal and resurfacing; about 1.1 million square metres of micro-surfacing; and about 270 kilometres of seal crack repairs.

Georgina is responsible for preventive maintenance and infrastructure replacement projects for more than 330 kilometres of roadways -- the town’s single largest asset.

Road conditions are regularly surveyed, assessed and prioritized.

This year’s long, long list of road repairs is based on assessments completed in 2021 and the next road assessment is scheduled for later this summer.

In advance of any road work, residents can expect to find a flyer at their door outlining what works is to be done, anticipated start and end dates, and contact information as well as any disturbances, driveway closures or requests to temporarily relocate vehicles.

Given the large volume of road repair projects in the town, staff created an interactive map where residents can search by address to see the work being done along with timing, progress and specific stretch of road being repaired. The town’s interactive map will be updated as road projects are added to the list.

The town’s road repair map currently displays 2023 projects.

Other major, multi-year reconstruction projects such as sections of Black River Road, Boyers Road and Riverglen Drive, are in the design phase. Area residents can expect to see pre-construction, engineering work in those areas.

The town is also looking to incorporate construction on regional roads into their own roadwork mapping system at a later date.

Last winter, the town launched a similar interactive “track my snowplow” map. The town is also working to update its plow tracker map to include sidewalk plows.
