York Region is inviting the community to learn more about the affordable housing development at 62 Bayview Pkwy. in Newmarket.

The municipality is hosting a drop-in public information session at the Newmarket Public Library June 22 to update residents about the project. Regional housing provider Housing York is working toward developing about 250 affordable housing units on the property, which once housed the regional headquarters.

“We want to hear from nearby neighbours, businesses, community agencies and the broader community. Your input will play an important role in the project and help ensure our plans respond to community needs,” the region said on its website.

The project is currently undergoing planning applications and schematic design. The property is fenced off, though the region has indicated it will put in temporary outdoor amenities. Construction is expected to get underway from 2025 to 2027.

The region said the event will offer information about the work underway and an opportunity for the public to share feedback. It also said travel to the venue via York Region Transit will be reimbursed, and children and families are welcome.

There is also an ongoing survey about temporary amenities. You can take that survey or find more information about the project through the York Region website.

“Tell us your ideas on how the community can enjoy the outdoor space before construction begins to redevelop the property,” the region said.
