The town is giving residents the chance to have a say in the direction of Aurora parks and recreation over the next five years.

Town staff has prepared a five-year draft update to the parks and recreation master plan, which sets out priorities for recreation facilities, parkland and park amenities and related services. The plan will help staff and council make decisions for the next five years, according to the town.

Residents are being invited to review the draft plan and provide feedback and input at an open house on May 1. Feedback can also be emailed to John Firman, manager of business support at jfirman@aurora.ca and/or Steve Langlois, consultant team lead at slanglois@mbpc.ca no later than May 3.

Feedback will help staff finalize the plan before it’s presented to Aurora’s general committee on June 6.

The town’s parks and recreation facilities are essential to the community’s health. They are inclusive, equitable spaces that support physical activity for all residents. The services allow residents to connect and celebrate with each other, and contribute to their “sense of self,” according to a town media release.

Securing land for the development of a community centre in the southwest, new opportunities for emerging sports, such as pickleball, and continued improvements to sports fields are some of the future projects identified in the draft master plan.

The open house will take place on May 1 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the UCMAS Program Room at the Aurora Family Leisure Complex, 135 Industrial Pkwy. N.
