Pefferlaws’s new skate park and pump track is one step closer to reality.

Recently, the town approved a contract with New Line skate parks Inc. for the new outdoor amenity on the grounds of Pefferlaw Park at 38 Pete’s Lane.

The skate park and pump track is one of a number of new outdoor amenities in the area.

The $1.4-million plan also includes a community garden and outdoor sports zone on the Pefferlaw Ice Pad.

“As a growing community, we are committed to providing opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors and have an active lifestyle,” said Mayor Margaret Quirk.

Skateboarding and BMX bikes have become increasingly popular, making the Pefferlaw Park is an ideal location as it is centrally located, highly visible and frequently visited by local youth.

The new skate park and pump track will feature a variety of trick stations for every skill level from beginners to those aspiring to be the next Tony Hawk.

The town will be hosting a series of online and in-person public engagement opportunities with a focus on encouraging youth input on the design.

Along with the pump track and skate park, the town is also working on building an outdoor sports zone on the Pefferlaw Ice Pad for use during the winter season as well as a community garden, new walking loop and exercise stations along the existing trails. The town is also working to improve the existing park amenities.

The new sports zone will feature colourful athletic tile flooring with markings for a basketball court, two dedicated pickleball courts and a multipurpose court. The sports zone equipment will be removed by town staff seasonally.

The town, together with the Georgina-Brock Garden Club and the Pefferlaw Association of Ratepayers, has been working to develop designs for the community garden with a focus on barrier-free gardening. The garden is to feature a new limestone pedestrian pathway and a series of at-grade and raised garden beds, a storage shed, composter, picnic table and workbench and two dwarf apple trees.

Construction on the park is set to take place this spring.
