With spring in full swing, the City of Mississauga is beginning its spring maintenance and cleanup programs.
POTHOLES AND ROADWAY DAMAGE REPAIR
Potholes and cracks on roadways usually occur or become more visible in the winter. Freezing and thawing can cause water under the asphalt to expand and contract.
While the majority of potholes are fixed throughout the spring, city crews repair potholes year-round when temperatures are warmer, and the weather allows for it.
STREET SWEEPING AND HARD SURFACE FLUSHING
Around mid- to late April, weather permitting, the city starts sweeping streets and flushing hard surfaces to clear litter and debris left behind from the winter.
Street sweeping prevents pollutants from entering Mississauga’s stormwater system and local waterways.
PARK CLEANUP AND MAINTENANCE
This time of year, the city’s employees will also be working to get parks, greenspaces, natural areas and trails ready for the busy spring and summer seasons.
This work includes litter cleanup, preparing plant beds for planting, the cleanup of trails and turf areas and preparing and maintaining sports fields for the upcoming season.
Parks, Forestry and Recreation staff will also support spring maintenance crews with trimming trees, hedges and bushes away from roadways and sidewalks.
Weather permitting, residents will also begin to see work happening on trees, including burlap removal, minor pruning, replacing tree stakes and reforming mulch saucers.
The city reminds the residents of the following during the season:
The city maintains 5,700 lane kilometres of roads, 2,420 kilometres of sidewalks, 51,000 catch basins, 1,000 pedestrian crossings and other infrastructure that residents rely on, like multi-use trails and cycling infrastructure.
More information on spring maintenance is available at the city’s website.
