Over 3,800 homes and businesses in 31 unserved and underserved communities in York Region will have high-speed internet access, thanks to a project by YorkNet with more than $48 million in combined federal and provincial funding.
Communities in the Markham and Stouffville areas that will receive funding include Ballantrae, Lemonville, Locust Hill, Musselman's Lake, Preston Lake, Vandorf, Dickson Hill and Markham.
“People in Markham-Stouffville have been patiently waiting for high-quality broadband to their homes,” said Paul Calandra, MPP for Markham-Stouffville.
Certain communities in Aurora and Oak Ridges will also benefit from increased connectivity to high-speed internet.
“Delivered through the Universal Broadband Fund program, thousands of residents will be provided with reliable and fast internet in underserved areas across Aurora and Oak Ridges,” said Michael Parsa, MPP for Aurora--Oak Ridges--Richmond Hill.
The project is part of an existing partnership between Ontario and Canada. On July 29, 2021, the governments announced their partnership to support large-scale, fibre-based projects that will provide high-speed internet access to more than 280,000 households and businesses across the province. This historic agreement was made possible by a joint federal-provincial investment totalling more than $1.2 billion.
The latest announcement brings Ontario closer to achieving its goal of making high-speed internet accessible in every community across the province by the end of 2025.
