You know those drivers who block traffic by getting stuck in the middle of an intersection when a traffic light changes.

Toronto council wants to target motorist who are “blocking the box” with big fines, calling on the province to boost the penalty for such infractions from $85 to $450. And if the errant motorist is in a community safety zone, the fine should jump from $120 to $500, according to the city.

“It’s time to send a strong message that blocking the box will cost you,” insisted Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie in a statement. “This week, city council approved my push to crack down on drivers caught blocking the box and adding to congestion in Toronto.”

McKelvie added she hopes to “slam the brakes on this bad behaviour” by imposing the hefty fines.

“Tying up oncoming traffic is one of the most inconsiderate things you can do. Your bad behaviour is costing people time and money, and contributing to congestion.”
