Southlake Regional Health Centre is one of the top 10 hospitals in Ontario and one of the top 25 in Canada, according to a survey for Newsweek magazine.

Evaluated among the best medical institutions in 28 countries, Southlake is up three spots compared to last year’s World’s Best Hospitals ranking.

The ranking is based on a survey sent to 80,000 health-care professionals, who considered areas such as patient experience, patient outcomes and hospital quality metrics.

“This recognition is incredibly rewarding, especially at a time when our teams have been through so much over the last several years,” chief of staff Dr. Charmaine van Schaik said in a statement.

“This award shows our team is continuing to provide leading edge care to the communities we serve, despite working under less-than-ideal circumstances.”

Southlake serves some of the fastest-growing and aging communities in Ontario, but hasn’t received a significant acute care expansion since 2003, despite seeing the number of emergency department visits doubling since then and routinely having the hospital operate over capacity.

Plans to build a new hospital and turn the current Newmarket location into an ambulatory care centre are in the works.

“Southlake is committed to building healthy communities through outstanding care, innovative partnerships and amazing people,” president Arden Krystal said.
