“A valued characteristic of the training is that it is delivered from PSHSA staff who have relevant experience in our sector and are able to connect with our members,” says Steve Jamieson, safety manager, Health, Safety and Wellness at Hamilton Health Sciences.
While the importance of protecting the health and safety of workers is undeniable, putting effective policies, procedures and protections in place can be a challenge.

But effective health and safety training for employees is key to creating and managing a safe and healthy workplace. Recognizing this need, Public Services Health & Safety Association (PSHSA) is making it easier for employers to provide their staff essential health and safety training.

More options for organizations to meet their health and safety training goals

PSHSA has provided health and safety training, consulting and resources to Ontario’s public services sector workers and employers for over 10 years.

As an approved provider of health and safety training, PSHSA offers a simple and cost-effective way for organizations to meet their health and safety training goals. Thanks to PSHSA’s commitment to flexible learning, companies can take advantage of a range of training opportunities in a variety of convenient formats and delivery options, regardless of their physical location.

Flexible learning options include in-person classroom learning at PSHSA’s Toronto office, eLearning that enables students to go at their own pace over a 30-day period and revisit the course material whenever they need and distance learning in a live, virtual classroom with one of PSHSA’s expert consultants. These consultants can also provide learning opportunities specific to a particular workplace, both in-person and online.

Relevant training tailored to the organization’s needs

Whether it’s one of PSHSA’s specific training courses or help with establishing a Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), PSHSA believes that organizations in any sector should have access to relevant training tailored to their needs. That’s why PSHSA offers flexible learning options for all learning styles.

A main differentiator of the training is PSHSA’s learner-centred delivery approach, which trains attendees about hazards specific to their actual workplace.

“Other training providers offer a generic approach which impacts the effectiveness of a training program, and the way attendees receive information,” says Frank Kraljevic, Canadian registered safety professional (CRSP) and HR specialist, Workplace Health and Safety at the City of Vaughan. “Instead, PSHSA provides specific examples and group work that applies to us.”

Another differentiator is that all PSHSA trainers have sector-specific expertise and knowledge of the health and safety regulations.

“A valued characteristic of the training is that it is delivered from PSHSA staff who have relevant experience in our sector and are able to connect with our members,” says Steve Jamieson, safety manager, Health, Safety and Wellness at Hamilton Health Sciences. “It creates a great learning atmosphere.”

Tom Lauzon, health & safety officer at the Greater Essex County District School Board, who has been working with PSHSA on implementing the Board’s Occupational JHSCs, adds: “They have thorough understanding of health and safety legislation. To date, PSHSA has certified over 500 of our Board staff.”
