When Richmond Hill Mayor David West was growing up, the taste of maple syrup was synonymous with spring to him.

“My family has enjoyed the process of making (and eating) Maple Syrup for many years,” West said.

Mayor West hosts a family friendly event April 1 -- Mayor West’s Maple Syrup Festival -- at Richmond Green Sports Complex, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The first year Richmond Hill held the festival was 2017.

The festival was the first event in Richmond Hill to be cancelled in 2020 due to COVID, West said.

The Richmond Hill Historical Society will sell maple syrup, the TRCA (Toronto and Region Conservation Auhority) and Black Creek Village will provide expertise. The event includes a pancake and maple syrup breakfast.

Performers will include Local Professor Pricklethorn, with his "Trees Please" presentation. Odeiwin, a grassroots organization focused on creating greater access to Indigenous gatherings, ceremonies, events, teachings, and healing in Richmond Hill, will share an Indigenous presentation in the opening ceremony. Local artists are part of this event. The RH150 celebration theme will be seen throughout the event.

The event will showcase local businesses and will include an Artisan marketplace. Richmond Hill Community organizations will meet and interact with residents. Residents can learn more about a sampling of the services available in Richmond Hill.

At the Artisan Marketplace, local artists can meet residents, share their work, and gain exposure. Individuals, groups, and guilds will participate with demonstrations and interactive elements.
