It’s been a project years in the making, and on March 25 at 11 a.m., the new Korean War Memorial will be unveiled at Peace Park, located at 14659 Yonge St., Aurora.

The project is a partnership between Veterans Affairs Canada, the Town of Aurora, the Township of King, the Town of Stouffville, and the Aurora Legion, and will pay tribute to veterans of the Korean War.

The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when North Korea invaded South Korea. During the war, more than 26,000 Canadians served on land, at sea and in the air. Sadly, 516 Canadians died. Long seen as a forgotten war, the Korean War is an important chapter in Canada’s military history.

Remembrances of Canada’s contribution to the Korean War can be found in many municipalities across the country. With this year marking the 70th anniversary of the signing of the armistice agreement which ended the fighting, it is both timely and fitting to memorialize the sacrifice those from Aurora and surrounding communities have made to protect the rights and freedoms around the world.

In 2021, the Town of Aurora and the Aurora Legion ran a social media campaign inviting residents of Aurora, King, or Whitchurch-Stouffville to help design the Korean War Memorial. Alex Theaker submitted the winning design.

Dignitaries from all partner organizations will be in attendance at the unveiling. A reception following the ceremony will take place at the Aurora Legion.
