Town of Newmarket employees, volunteers, politicians, committee members and contractors no longer have to prove they have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
In August 2021, Newmarket joined other municipalities in mandating that anyone working for the town be double vaccinated, with a deadline of Nov. 1 of that year.
In January 2022, Newmarket said it had fired three employees for failing to comply.
This week, on March 6, the town said it is suspending the policy.
“This is in line with neighbouring York Region municipalities and is effective immediately,” the town said in a statement.
The municipality won’t disclose if the three fired employees have been or will be rehired.
“In order to respect the confidentiality of all involved, the town does not discuss individual employment,” a spokesperson said in an email.
