Students can apply to be York Regional Police chief for a day

York Regional Police, in collaboration with the York Regional Police Appreciation Night Committee, is excited to announce that our Police Chief for a Day Contest is back.

Open to all York Region Grade 5 students, this essay contest will see the winner named Police Chief for a Day and take the helm from Chief Jim MacSween on April, 28, 2023.

Students will need to write a 300 to 400-word essay, answering the question: How would you make a difference in your community?

To enter, simply submit the essay to ChiefForADay@yrp.ca by Friday, March 10. Ten students will be selected as Deputy Chiefs and have the opportunity to present their essay to a panel of judges on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at York Regional Police Headquarters in Aurora. The winner will be named Police Chief for a Day.

The contest winner must be a Grade 5 student who attends school in York Region and must be able to attend all the following events:
March 21: Speech contest
March 23: Uniform fitting
April 28: Perform duties as Chief for a Day
May 11: Present essay at Police Appreciation Night dinner

The winner will get their very own custom made Chief of Police uniform, tour our training facility and meet with members of our Air Support, Emergency Response and Canine Units. They will also present their winning essay in front of crowd of more than 1,000 people at the Police Appreciation Night dinner.

The Police Chief for a Day Contest is sponsored by the York Regional Police Appreciation Night committee and the Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan Chinese Business Association.
