Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) was presented with four awards of recognition this month, all highlighting its contributions to the community.

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport’s Angus Mowat Award of Excellence recognized VPL’s Belonging Initiative, which aims to promote inclusion throughout the community. Programs such as this often require using everything from print services to social media to get the word out. VPL also received a second award from the Ministry, the Minister’s Award for Innovation, highlighting the library system’s COVID-19 Research Group, which supported the City of Vaughan’s pandemic response.

Two individuals within the library system were also recognized with awards by the Ontario Library Association. Rose Savage, Chair of the VPL board, received the James Bain Medallion for outstanding leadership in public library governance. The OLA also bestowed the W. J. Robertson Medallion for public librarian of the year on Margie Singleton, who Vaughan Public Libraries’ CEO.

Singleton recognized the significance of the awards in a media release:

“These awards are built upon the hard work of everyone in the organization, and my thanks are extended to dedicated staff who make the remarkable commonplace. The OLA awards highlight the best in our profession and to win among an incredible field of nominees is a significant achievement.”

Vaughan Public Libraries was presented with the awards as part of a city council meeting on February 7.
