Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Newmarket and York Region forecasting a 'wintry mix of snow and ice pellets' that could make travel hazardous beginning Wednesday night.

There's also a risk of freezing rain in some areas Wednesday night into Thursday, the agency advises.

An approaching Colorado low is expected to bring the winter storm to much of southern Ontario.

"A wintry mix of snow and ice pellets is expected across the area and precipitation may fall heavily at times leading to hazardous winter travel conditions," Environment Canada said.

There remains some uncertainty to exact location, timing and accumulations of snow and ice pellets.

Winter storm watches may be issued in some areas as the event draws nearer.

"Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow and ice pellets. There may be a significant impact on travel in the region."
